Carta de Cecilie Surasky JVP
Aire cada vez más enrarecido. Carta de Cecilie Surasky de Jewish Voice for Peace denunciando una lista negra de la Liga Anti-Difamación:
My family survived the pogroms of Eastern Europe and came to the US before the outbreak of WWII only to see many close relatives killed in the Holocaust. My grandparents took their profound grief and channeled it into creating a state they hoped would be safe for Jews and a light unto nations.
It is because of their story that I was brought up to remember the past and to create a world that refuses to remain silent in the face of such persecution.
And it is because of their story that I’ve dedicated myself, like so many of you, to doing everything I can to push for a truly just peace for both Israelis and Palestinians that recognizes the full humanity of all peoples.
But to be told by the Anti-Defamation League, as we were last week when they named us one of the top-ten "anti-Israel" groups in the US, that this dream makes me anti-Israel and somehow less Jewish is beyond repugnant.
To the Anti-Defamation League: you do not speak for me, for my family, for our community.
For all of us who support the work of Jewish Voice for Peace, our belief in the universal value of human life is essential, not negotiable. Our work for human rights is based on a vision of possibilities for all of us.
The story about the ADL’s top ten list has made the news across Israel – in Haaretz, and the Jerusalem Post, and Ynet . But it’s also triggering quite a reaction here in the United States, revealing yet one more way the Anti-Defamation League’s Abe Foxman has a broken moral compass when it comes to Israel.
Below is JVP’s official response to being named on the ADL’s Top Ten list.

Anti-Defamation League's list of top ten "anti-Israel" groups
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is at it again. They just came up with a list of the top ten most influential anti-Israel Groups in America, and Jewish Voice for Peace makes the list. We appreciate the honor, except that the ADL--as usual--got a few things wrong in describing us.
TOP 5 THINGS ABOUT JVP THE ADL GOT FLATLY WRONG
(1) JVP IS NEITHER ANTI-ISRAEL NOR ANTI-ZIONIST.
We do not hold Zionism as a litmus test for membership. Some of our members are Zionists, some are anti-Zionists, and some are non-Zionists. We believe you can define yourself in any of these ways as long as you support an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank -- including East Jerusalem -- and Gaza, and you advocate for human rights, which naturally apply equally to Israelis and Palestinians.
We stand by Israelis that hold these views, such as Israeli conscientious objectors and Israeli actors refusing to play in illegal settlements in the West Bank.
We stand by Palestinians that hold these views, such as Palestinian activists protesting the Israeli confiscation of land in the West Bank town of Bil'in.
We stand by internationals that hold these views, such as students pressing for divestment from occupation and war crimes or activists trying to break the siege of Gaza.
What unites us is our belief in human rights and equality.
(2) WE DO NOT 'USE' OUR JEWISH IDENTITY TO PROTECT ANTI-SEMITES.
We are Jews and allies who strongly oppose anti-Jewish hatred, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab racism.
We do understand that as Jews we have a special role to play in bringing about a change in American and Israeli policy. Israel claims to be acting in the name of the Jewish people. Some American Jewish organizations defend Israel right or wrong, claiming to be representing all American Jews. It is up to us to set the record straight.
We strongly reject the misleading accusations of anti-Semitism that the ADL and others have used in other to protect Israel's policies. For example, when the ADL accuses Archbishop Desmond Tutu of anti-Semitism, it is not only wrong, but it also makes all Jews less safe when facing a real case of anti-Jewish hatred.
(3) ACKNOWLEDGING THE NAKBA IS NOT OPPOSING ISRAEL'S EXISTENCE.
Would the ADL call those that acknowledge the genocide of Native-Americans in this land anti-American?
We believe that in order to reach a just and comprehensive peace between Israelis and Palestinians, the Nakba must be addressed. Without acknowledging the events of 1947-9, there will be no truth and reconciliation. JVP adheres to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states that "everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and return to his country." Israelis should acknowledge the Palestinian refugees' right of return and negotiate a mutually agreed just solution based on principles established in international law, including return, compensation, and/or resettlement.
We acknowledge our own legacy of suffering and the horrors of the Holocaust, but we do not allow these to blind us to the suffering of others. Quite the opposite, we have learned from our own history and from our own tradition not to stand silent when others are suffering. The ADL, on the other hand, fights Holocaust-deniers and denies full recognition of the Armenian genocide at the same time.
(4) THE ADL IMPOSES ON PALESTINIANS A BURDEN IT DOES NOT IMPOSE ON ITSELF.
Jews in America constitute fewer than 2% of the population. We would be rightfully upset if we had to recognize the United States as a "Christian state." And yet, he ADL expects Palestinians -- 20% of Israel's population -- to recognize Israel as a "Jewish state." The ADL apparently has learned little from Hillel: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn."
(5) STARVING PALESTINIANS IS NOT OUR JUDAISM.
The ADL protests the fact that JVP members hold signs stating "Starving Palestinians Is Not My Judaism." This one they got right, and they have the picture to prove it. Our question to the ADL is: what is your Judaism?

Un agujero en la jaula de GazaLa caravana Viva Palestina, un convoy internacional ha roto, ruidosa y festivamente, el cerco de la Franja de Gaza y, poco a poco, está introduciendo en Palestina casi 3,6 millones de euros en alimentos y medicinas. Unas nubes bajas humedecen el ambiente y alientan el bochorno. Entre ellas bailotean, a lo lejos, los helicópteros de las Fuerzas Armadas de Israel, pero nadie les presta atención, porque hoy la fiesta está a ras de tierra, en el paso fronterizo de Rafah, ahí donde acaba Egipto y empieza Gaza. Es el punto por el que acaba de cruzar la primera furgoneta Hyundai de la caravana Viva Palestina, el convoy internacional que rompe, ruidoso y festivo, el cerco de la franja y, poco a poco, está introduciendo en Palestina casi 3,6 millones de euros en alimentos y medicinas. Ayman, el conductor del vehículo, sirio de origen, se tira del coche nada más pasar el bloque de hormigón, donde se repite insistente un lema, “Free Gaza”, en rojo, verde, negro, blanco. Manotea con su pañuelo al cuello, los ojos llorosos, la voz ronca de gritar. “¡Gracias, gracias, gracias!”, repetía en inglés y en árabe mientras besaba el suelo, enfebrecido. Su ilusión era tan contagiosa que hasta Hassan, el policía palestino que custodia la garita de la aduana, le corresponde con un abrazo enternecido. “Es el día más feliz que recuerdo”, observa el agente, tímido y conmovido, la sonrisa escondida bajo el bigote naciente. Tras Ayman entran lentamente los demás activistas, hasta 370 de 30 países distintos, en 150 coches cargados más allá de lo que la seguridad aconseja, con 500 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria. Por las ventanillas se ven los sacos de harina, arroz y azúcar, las latas de tomate, las legumbres, los bidones de aceite, los palés de medicamentos (para el dolor, para la fiebre, vacunas contra infecciones, suero…), todo lo que ha pasado el control de las autoridades egipcias y que “no es susceptible de usarse como componente de un arma”, explican los portavoces militares de El Cairo. La comitiva, impulsada por el parlamentario verde George Galloway (Reino Unido), es la mayor que ha logrado abrir un agujero en el cerco de Gaza, una tierra absolutamente bloqueada desde que Hamás ganase las elecciones legislativas en 2006. Sólo el asalto a la Flotilla de la Libertad del pasado 31 de mayo, cuando Israel mató a nueve activistas –ocho turcos y un estadounidense de origen turco- que trataban de tomar tierra en Gaza a bordo del buque Mavi Mármara, hizo que la presión internacional lograse un alivio de este asedio: el Gobierno de Tel Aviv permitió la entrada de alimentos hasta entonces prohibidos, tan elementales como las verduras, las frutas o las patatas fritas. Egipto venía aplicado un bloqueo similar, pero lo ocultaba bajo la sombra del israelí, más duro aún, más visible. También aquellas muertes le forzaron a aflojar el puño y facilitó el paso por tierra de mercancías y peregrinos. En esa nueva etapa se enmarca la entrada, ayer, de Viva Palestina, cuyos miembros partieron el 18 de septiembre de Londres y que ha viajado por Francia, Turquía, Argelia, Marruecos, Jordania y Siria recogiendo colaboradores. “El viaje ya se hacía eterno”, relata Kevin Ovenden, uno de sus portavoces. Tras llegar a Siria y atracar en Latakia, comenzaron a negociar con el Gobierno egipcio para lograr el permiso de llegada. “Que sean musulmanes no quiere decir que estén arropando precisamente la causa palestina”, acusa Ovenden. Por eso, tras anunciar por tres veces su partida, se veían obligados a posponerla. Al fin, la noche del martes llegó la autorización. Con una salvedad: sólo 30 personas podrían arribar por mar. El resto, tras mil escalas imposibles, llegó por avión. En la madrugada del miércoles al jueves todos estaban ya reunidos alrededor de su caravana en El-Arish, listos para salir. Querían pulverizar su previsión de estar en 36 horas en Gaza. Y lo han logrado: apenas 15 horas después pisaban el otro lado del muro en Rafah. Sin embargo, faltaban 18 compañeros: entre ellos, el propio Galloway, declarado persona non grata por El Cairo después de que en enero pasado intentase entrar con ayuda humanitaria y se enfrentase con la policía; y un joven mauritano, al que se le requisó el pasaporte. Ovenden explica, preocupado, que aún no sabe qué cargos se han alegado para su detención. Mientras este portavoz moreno, rapado y ágil explica los contratiempos de su expedición, las furgonetas comienzan a aparcar en una plaza pequeña, engalanada de cintas de colores y banderas palestinas. Los vecinos de Rafah salen a la calle a agradecerles su ayuda y preguntar, con ansia evidente, cuándo y cómo se hará el reparto. Zaher al-Birawi, el coordinador de Viva Palestina dentro de Gaza, les dice con voz suave que va a reunirse de inmediato con agentes locales para proceder a la distribución a lo largo de toda la franja. “Las mercancías llegarán lo antes posible, se repartirán desde el viernes mismo –trata de tranquilizarlos-, ya habéis visto que el mundo no nos ha abandonado”. Un grupo de expertos de la zona ha analizado en los últimos meses los proyectos y familias que necesitan una ayuda más urgente, por lo que el reparto podrá acometerse en 48 horas. Después de eso, los activistas regresarán. “Hemos roto por quinta vez el bloqueo, eso es un logro personal, pero nos pesa la seguridad de que no aportamos más que un grano de arena, que Gaza va ya por su cuarto año de cerco y que no puede seguir así mucho más: hay un millón y medio de personas limitadas a diario y la mitad son niños. La tasa de pobreza aquí es del 79% y el paro llega al 45%… ¿Recordamos lo que pasó en los bombardeos del año pasado? 1.400 muertos y 50.000 palestinos sin hogar, eso pasó, y no les dejan ni introducir ladrillos. ¿Cómo no vamos a estar aquí para ayudar, si son el pueblo más atenazado del planeta?”, resume como una enciclopedia Azra, una voluntaria procedente de Malasia. Los habitantes no los dejan ni hablar con la prensa, los agasajan con lo que buenamente pueden. A Fatma, viuda, 86 años, nueve hijos, le gustaría ofrecerles dulces, pero tiene pocos ingredientes para elaborarlos, vetados desde hace años. “Como si los dulces mataran judíos”, se enfada. A los cooperantes les da igual y el pan con higos que les regala les sabe a gloria. A más de uno la navegación le ha puesto el cuerpo malo, confiesa Kevin, de Glasgow, subido al techo de un coche desde el que contempla las calles, admirado. Los extranjeros comen en paz, hambrientos de puro nervio, sentados junto a una fuente sin agua. Los niños los miran con curiosidad pero dejan de prestarles atención cuando descubren un nuevo entretenimiento: la réplica de Benjamin Netanyahu (primer ministro de Israel) que traen en uno de los coches, con un cuchillo de carnicero en la mano. En dos minutos, el arma parece inofensiva, machacada a pedradas. Entre los casi 400 activistas que han accedido prodigiosamente a Gaza se encuentran 40 que ya participaron en la flotilla de mayo. No quieren protagonismo, pero suya fue la idea del homenaje doble que están recibiendo las víctimas del Ejército israelí. De camino a Egipto, a la altura de donde se produjo el abordaje, cerca de Ashdod, los componentes de la expedición lanzaron flores por la borda, en un recuerdo más rápido de lo esperado por aquello de amortiguar los retrasos acumulados. El homenaje más sentido será hoy, cuando se planten árboles con tierra recogida en las tumbas de los nueve muertos del Mármara. “Que la sangre de entonces encarne la vida, que la memoria de su sacrificio sea la semilla de la paz”, resume Al-Birawi, casi sin voz, demasiado dañada por los altibajos de la emoción. Una llamada salvadora le evita las lágrimas: le informan de que en París y en Dublín grupos de jóvenes han salido a la calle con banderas palestinas para festejar su hazaña. “Es verdad, lo hemos logrado”, susurra como si aún no lo creyera. A paso lento, sin ganas de dejar la humilde fiesta, los cooperantes se dispersan al caer la noche, apenas rozando las seis de la tarde. Van a instalarse para la noche, a reponer fuerzas, a conectarse a la lentísima línea de Internet para contarle a los suyos y al mundo que están bien, que han horadado el blindaje. Al amanecer retomarán su tarea, dos días intensos por delante que esperan sean pacíficos, aunque las luces de las patrulleras israelíes se vean a lo lejos, en el mar, y se oiga el runrún de sus aviones. Khaled, el fotógrafo oficial de la caravana, el mismo que hace horas reconocía que la travesía había sido durísima, que se había desanimado, que estaba reventado, mira por la ventana de su cuarto antes de darse una ducha. En la pared de enfrente se lee: “Gracias por llevar a Gaza más cerca de la libertad”. Se gira, medita, y suelta risueño: “Ahora pregúntame de nuevo si merece la pena”. Mike Leigh rechaza invitación de ir a Israel
Leigh justificó su decisión en una carta a Renen Schorr, director de la Escuela de Cine y Televisión Sam Spiegel, quien la difundió este domingo en su página web.
"Como sabes, siempre había tenido serios recelos sobre ir, pero me permití ser persuadido por tu sinceridad y tu compromiso. Y precisamente por esas cualidades tuyas lamento especialmente haberte abandonado. Pero no tengo otra elección. No puedo ir, no quiero ir y no voy a ir", señala Leigh, seis veces nominado a los premios Oscar.
En la misiva, el autor de "Secretos y Mentiras", "Todo o nada" o "Vera Drake" explica que el Ejecutivo israelí ha ido "de mal en peor" y que su visita "aparecería implícitamente como un apoyo a Israel".
Trascendió que el mayor motivo de Leigh para no ir fue la enmienda que obliga a los no judíos, que aspiren a la ciudadanía israelí, a jurar lealtad al país como estado judío y democrático.
El reconocido director tenía previsto comenzar la visita, que iba durar una semana, el próximo día miércoles.
Leigh iba a ofrecer una clase magistral de tres días y recibir un título honorífico en la escuela Sam Spiegel, mantener encuentros con público en Jerusalén y Haifa, y ejercer como expositor en la ciudad palestina de Yenín, al norte de Cisjordania.

Acuérdense de este día. Es el día en que Israel cambió su cara. Y como consecuencia ahora podrá también cambiar su nombre: la República Judía de Israel. Tal como la República Islámica de Irán.
Es cierto que la propuesta de Ley de Juramento de Fidelidad que el Primer Ministro pretende pasar se refiere en apariencia solamente a solicitudes de ciudadanía de no-judíos; pero la misma afecta el destino de todos nosotros.
Desde ahora seremos un nuevo país -etnocrático, teocrático, nacionalista y racista- con sello oficial incluido.
Aquel que piense que esto no le afecta se equivoca. La mayoría silenciosa acepta este paso con indiferencia preocupante, como si dijera no me importa en qué país vivo.
También aquellos que piensan que el mundo va a seguir viendo a Israel como una democracia luego de esta ley no saben de qué se trata. Es otro paso más que va a afectar duramente la imagen de Israel ante el mundo.
Biniamín Netaniahu demostrará hoy que él es en realidad Avigdor Líberman. También Iaakóv Neemán demostrará que él es un fiel miembro de (el partido ultranacionalista) Israel Beiteinu. El Partido Laborista demostrará que no es nada más que un trapo de piso.
Y todo Israel demostrará hoy que no le importa nada de nada. Hoy es Ley de Juramento de Fidelidad para los que solicitan ciudadanía, mañana será Ley de Juramento de Fidelidad para los ya ciudadanos. El dique de contención se rompió hoy, y amenaza con ahogar los restos de democracia que quedan hasta que nos quedemos tal vez con un país judío que nadie sabrá qué es, pero que seguramente no será democrático.
Esos que piden hoy ese juramento de lealtad son los mismos que en realidad traicionan su lealtad al país.
El parlamento israelí discutirá en las próximas sesiones cerca de 20 propuestas de otras leyes antidemocráticas. La Asociación de Derechos Civiles en Israel publicó este fin de semana la lista negra: “Ley de Lealtad” para los Miembros del Parlamento, “Ley de Lealtad” para Productores de Cine, “Ley de Lealtad” para ONGs, ilegalización de la Nakba (Nota del traductor: conmemoración del día del desastre para los palestinos, coincidente con la conmemoración del día de la Independencia para los israelíes judíos), prohibición de llamados al boicot, propuesta de revocación de ciudadanía. Peligrosa danza macartista de legisladores ignorantes que ni siquiera comenzaron a comprender qué es democracia. Incluso si una parte de estas legislaciones son aprobadas, cambiará nuestro destino y nuestra esencia como país.
No es difícil comprender al “dúo dinámico” Netaniahu-Líberman: como se trata de nacionalistas perjurados, nadie espera de ellos entender que la democracia no es solamente el poder de la mayoría, sino en primer lugar los derechos de la minoría.
Mucho más difícil es entender la pasividad de las masas: la plaza debería hoy estar llena de masas de ciudadanos que no quieren vivir en un país donde las minorías son oprimidas por leyes draconianas, como esa que les exige un juramento falso a un Estado Judío. Pero asombrosamente esto no parece afectarle a casi nadie.
Decenas de años nos ocupamos en vano de la cuestión ¿quién es judío?
Ahora no escapará la cuestión ¿qué es judía? ¿Qué es Estado de la Nación Judía?
¿Acaso tal estado le pertenece más a los judíos de la diáspora que a los árabes que son sus ciudadanos?
¿Acaso esos judíos de la diáspora decidirán nuestro destino, y a ello le llamaremos democracia?
¿Será que los miembros de Naturei Karta (Nota del traductor: judíos ultra-religiosos anti-sionistas, opuestos a la existencia del Estado de Israel) que se oponen a su existencia, y con ellos los cientos de miles de judíos que ni siquiera pudieron un pie en Israel, harán de este país lo que ellos quieran?
¿Fiestas de guardar obligatorias judías? ¿Leyes civiles de acuerdo a la ley religiosa judía de kashrut? ¿Refuerzo a la fuerte mordaza del régimen religioso, como si no fuera hoy ya suficiente para desvirtuar la democracia?
El juramento de masas a “el Estado Judío” puede grabar su destino: el de convertirla en un estado de la halajá (Nota del traductor: ley religiosa judía) como Arabia Saudita.
Es cierto que por ahora se trata de una consigna vacía y ridícula. No existen tres judíos que puedan acordar cómo se vería un Estado Judío. Sólo que la historia nos enseñó que los caminos al infierno también están señalados con consignas huecas.
Mientras tanto, la propuesta de la nueva ley sólo servirá para enajenar aún más a los árabes israelíes, y al final servirá para enajenar de nosotros a sectores mucho más amplios.
Y así es que debajo de la alfombra todavía arde el fuego; el fuego de la falta de credibilidad básica en la justicia de nuestro camino.
Solamente una falta de seguridad de este tipo puede generar propuestas de ley tan grotescas como la que se aprobará -¡seguramente se aprobará!- hoy.
Canadá no necesita que nadie jure lealtad al “Estado Canadiense”, ni tampoco lo necesitan otros países. Sólo Israel.
Es una “prueba de duda” para provocar aún más a la minoría árabe y empujarla aún más al rincón de la deslealtad, para que podamos un día desahogar nuestro instinto y librarnos de ellos finalmente. Apoyo a Abdallah Abu Rahmah, de la resistencia no violenta
On August 24th, 2010, in a hearing widely considered a mockery of justice, Palestinian nonviolent organizer Abdallah Abu Rahmah was convicted by an Israeli military court of incitement and organizing illegal marches.
Abdallah is a leading organizer of nonviolent demonstrations that take place weekly in the Israeli-occupied West Bank village of Bil’in. These marches protest Israel’s construction-- in blatant violation of international law-- of the Wall and settlements on Bil’in’s land.
Abdallah, a 39-year-old schoolteacher from Bil’in, awaits sentencing and faces a maximum jail sentence of 10 years for peaceful organizing. The prosecution of Abu Rahmah is part of Israel’s ongoing effort to crush the growing Palestinian movement of unarmed resistance to Israeli occupation.

Presenting Antigone in Jenin Refugee Camp & The Jenin Media Center and Cinema School
October 16th:
On October 16, New York will be celebrating and promoting two interconnected innovative projects:
Antigone in Jenin Refugee Camp:
Antigone in Jenin Refugee Camp is a fiction film set in the West Bank, Occupied Palestinian Territories, and based on the real-life stories of eight young students at the Freedom Theater, a theater located in the heart of the Camp. Eight film students- four women and four men, between the ages of 19-32, ranging from secular-leftist to traditional-religious- have come together for a single project based on their own stories and struggles. They have already produced four short documentary films exploring the relationship of the Palestinian woman to her society. Now they join renowned filmmakers Juliano Mer Khamis and Udi Aloni, and prominent scriptwriter Alaa Hlehel, in order to make their first fiction film, Antigone in Jenin Refugee Camp.
The Palestinian Media & Talents Center:
The establishment of a media & talents center, a one-of-a-kind hub for young Palestinian creators, in which we will be able to create TV, Internet and cinema contents, from documentaries to miniseries and feature films. Serving all Palestinian artists from Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Israel and the Palestinian diaspora, the center aims to promote cultures of resistance without the supervision of any political parties.

His letter to 'The Independent'
Dear Sir
In a recent news item on Foxnews/online, subsequently abridged in The Evening Standard, Abraham Foxman, head of the ADL, (Anti Defamation League) in the USA , accuses my new production of The Wall and by implication me, of anti-Semitism.
A serious charge that demands a response. Had Mr Foxman come to my show before passing judgement and commenting publicly he might, I hope, have held his peace, as there is no anti Semitism in The Wall Show. The song to which he refers, Good Bye Blue Sky, describes how ordinary people, military and civilians alike, suffer trauma in the aftermath of war.
The visuals that accompany the song show waves of B52 bombers dropping various symbols from bomb bays on a war ravaged landscape. The symbols are: in no particular order, a Crucifix, a Hammer and Sickle, a Star of David, A Crescent and Star, a Mercedes sign , a Dollar sign, and a Shell Oil sign.
Mr Foxman's concern was that potentially the juxtoposition of a Star of David and a Dollar sign might incite hatred of Jews. Contrary to Mr Foxman's assertion, there are no hidden meanings in the order or juxtaposition of these symbols.
The point I am trying to make in the song is that the bombardment we are all subject to by conflicting religious, political, and economic ideologies only encourages us to turn against one another, and I mourn the concommitant loss of life.
In so far as The Wall has a political message it is to seek to illuminate our condition, and find new ways to encourage peace and understanding, particularly in the Middle East .
Incidentally, being from England, I had never heard of the ADL until today, but I have googled them and I see from their mission statement of 1913 that their brief is not only to defend the Jewish people from defamation, but also, and I quote, " to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens".
Perhaps we should all focus on that lofty ideal and stop cowering in our corners throwing stones at one another.
